Episode 01

Shadow AI

Shadow AI is simple: any AI tool your team uses without approval or guardrails.

It usually starts innocently. Someone wants to work faster. “Let me paste this customer dataset into a free AI.” “Let me drop internal strategy into an AI slide-maker.”

Helpful? Yes. Safe? Not at all.

What’s the real risk

When employees use public AI tools, your data often leaves your domain, often permanently. You can’t delete it. You can’t track it, and you definitely can’t prevent it from reappearing somewhere else.

That’s why it’s called Shadow AI. It bypasses every security control without any malicious intent.

A quick scenario

Someone uploads internal code or customer information into a free AI tool. The AI stores it to improve the model. Your sensitive data now lives on someone else’s server. You have no visibility, no control, no rollback.

No malware. No hacker. Just accidental exposure.

So what’s the right way

Shadow AI isn’t bad behaviour. It’s a sign your team wants to move faster. The solution isn’t blocking AI. It’s giving people approved tools, clear guidelines, and safe ways to work.

The smartest organisations don’t stop innovation. They steer it.
